As for before 2000, in the 80s alone, Madonna earned over 1.2 billion dollars, which is more than Jackson. And, as globally recognized, as far as chart success goes, Madonna only comes second to The Beatles. In addition, every one of Madonna's albums have gone multi - platinum, whereas, only 5 of Jackson's have gone platinum.

As far as success in the UK goes, Madonna more than trumps Jackson ! Especially over the last decade, when she's had 7 number 1 albums, consecutively, most recently, Celebration. Her Sticky & Sweet Tour is the highest grossing tour ever.

Oh by the way madonna herself acknowledge it! as she say ther is/was none better than him "THE KING" and in the movie 'this is it' he had energy as that of a teenager. He could put some current artist to shame. Hes not only singly THE KING OF POP (any female artist can be queen of pop, check wikipedia, they even have rihanna, beyonce, janet and britneys spears as queen of pop) but THE GREATEST ENTERTAINER THAT EVER LIVED. Now no one can touch that. madonna is great. L.O.V.E :)

sorry u got that in reverse. the fact that Mj was not performing bc he had other business to take care of. He is not just an entertainer. His last album which according to the media was a flop? stupid? sold over 10 million copies. now madonna cant even sell that number. her last album sold 3-4 million world wide. HE IS THE MOST FAMOUS PERSON ON PLANET EARTH even pple in my village who do not have a Tv or radio know MICHAEL JACKSON. Madonna is great dont get me wrong but no way bigger than MJ :)
