You can do the same thing in linux. In a Gnome session at least, you do the same steps with the screenshootin​g, then paste the image into gimp or whatever. Save, right click on desktop background and choose "change desktop background" (depending on which distribution or session it might vary, look under applications menu as well) and simply change the background as you normally would.
