Atomic Age - J. Robert Oppenheimer Quote

J. Robert Oppenheimer was an American theoretical physicist, best known for his role as the scientific director of the Manhattan Project, the World War II effort to develop the first nuclear weapons, at the secret Los Alamos laboratory in New Mexico. He is known colloquially as "the father of the atomic bomb". Taken from the Atomic Age video collection.

kilted. Do you ...   (EasyCompanyAirborne)20.11.2009
kilted. Do you doubt what I said? This is documented evidence which can easily be proven. It is on record that the American people hated Communists and that they though men like Hoover and McCarthy were heroes. You may not like it, but that is what the American people think. All Americans are true patriots. Truman and Eisenhower are both on record as saying that Oppenheimer was a traitor. So counter fact with fact, not with dirty insults.

Oppenheimer is ...   (nader85021)13.11.2009
Oppenheimer is quoting the bhagavad gita in order to relate what is going through his head, when he was contemplating the destruction the A-bomb can cause. He is quoting a conversation between Arjuna and Krishna, where Krishna is persuading Arjuna to fight his loved ones, by saying that he is death, destroyer of world, meaning all of the will die eventually by him, so lamenting about fighting them and eventually killing them is useless since they will die anyway.
Oppenheimer was ...   (EasyCompanyAirborne)13.11.2009
Oppenheimer was considered by the great American people as a traitor. It is for this reason that those loved in America like J Edgar Hoover and Dwight D Eisenhower were trying to combat Oppenheimer, who was seen by Americans as a Communist agitator. Americans are an honest people and hate traitors and fifth columnists. Men like J Edgar Hoover are patriots and saints to the American cause.

Oops, I missed out right at the beginning where he says 'We knew the world would not be the same.' just before he says 'a few people laughed' This is in reply to Patnumroad01 btw
"A few people ...   (NiklasEC)9.11.2009
"A few people laughed, a few people cried. Most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhaghavad Ghita; Vishnu is trying to persuade a prince that he should do his duty and, to impress him, takes on his multi-armed form and says: 'Now I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds.' I suppose we all thought that, one way or another.
I agree with ...   (Platnumroad01)9.11.2009
I agree with everything, he was deeply ashamed of what he did. After my research about him I learned that the atomic bomb wasn't even his most impressive work. Now although the bomb was terrible it was a scientific feat. I just think that people should know him for other things and not just the bomb.

Can someone tell me what he is saying throughout the whole video. I am doing a project for history.

When J. Robert Oppenheimer said "I am become death, the destroyer Of worlds", He was not referring to the atomic bomb. He was referring to the Chuck Norris halloween costume he was wearing.

poor guy. and everyone seems to think that this quote means that hes proud of his actions. quite the contrary, in doing his duty, he created somthing horrible. this quote speaks to his regret and guilt.
holy shit. ...   (Superman54)24.10.2009
holy shit. oppenheimer thought such a powerful weapon would end war completely. no need for war when nations can be destroyed in an instant. no he isnt the devil. i am become death, the destroyer of words, isnt somthing hes saying cause he thinks death is cool. no, hes saying that because he has become somthing terrible, and caused something terrible. the guilt eventually killed him. seriously, read up on his life. its interesting and you realise how human this man is.
im happy to see ...   (Superman54)24.10.2009
im happy to see someone defending this man. oppenheimer was a genius among geniuses. a man separated from the world because of his mind. the manhatten project was the first, and only time he ever got to truely apply himself. it wasnt about the bomb, it was about him. a mans heart is a strange thing.

I feel sympathy for ...   (npaltmp)11.10.2009
I feel sympathy for this man. He was an amazingly gifted scientist whom was put under tremendous pressure to build a device which would end a war and save countless Allied lives. Inventing it could not be undone, but not inventing it means the war continues, passably until the enemy builds their own. You should not judge him unless you understand the circumstances surrounding his decision.
The nuclear weapon ...   (catholicforever)11.10.2009
The nuclear weapon was something that was waiting to be discovered. Everyone on here can say that America killed innocent people when we dropped the bombs. However, imagine what Hitler would have done if the nazis discovered it first. We should all thank god that America discovered it first.
